Cal Newport, in his 2012 book, So Good They Can’t Ignore You, argues that instead of following your passion, you should develop skills that will help you earn a living. As you increase your level of expertise you’ll naturally be interested to learn more and want to excel.
I think this is definitely the case. Younger me wouldn’t have thought marketing was very cool. But, now I’ve been doing it for 12 years and learnt a thing or two, I’m keen to see how far I can go with it. So, these are the things I’m doing in my spare time to see if one day I’ll manage to be so good they can’t ignore me.

Football Fútbol Futebol
This was a Facebook page for UK-based football fans that I grew to over 10,000 followers. Although I did manage to get plenty of engagement on my posts, I decided to hang up my boots after it became clear that what it would take to monetise the audience wasn’t going to be worth the effort. December 2024 to August 2025.
